2. The subjunctive mood
The past tense of the modal auxiliary verb is also seen in the subjunctive mood.

2.1. The subjunctive mood
To express the subjunctive mood, "could", "might", "would" and "should" are used. "Would" is preferred.

(1)
a. You could pass the exam if we tried harder.
b. I would go and see her if I were you.

(Cf. the past subjunctive mood, the subjunctive past perfect)
