―There were many overseas students in the hall of the International Center. Bellini and two cats were among them, too. Rickey was coming.―
"Ha, Hi, Bellini, ah, there you are," Rickey said as he was getting nervous.
What's the matter? You weren't talking well. And I smell mint. Did you take mint to prevent your bad breath?
"Hello, Rickey. Oh, what's the matter? You look pale."
"Well, I'm catching cold," Rickey looked embarrassed.
Aha, you are catching cold. Take care of yourself.
"Are you O.K?"
"Yes. I have only one class this afternoon."
"Is he your keeper?" Pina asked.
"Yes."
"I haven't seen him before. Let me see, he looks like a good-natured man."
It's an only merit of his.
"Hmmm … will you excuse me?" Rickey said and he went to the restroom.
"He must have been drinking last night. I think he has a hangover. He smells as if he has been drinking."
Ah … , She knows you've told a lie, Rickey.

「ちょ、ちょっと失礼」とリッキー。リッキーはそのままトイレに向かっていった。
「彼、昨日は飲んだんじゃないかしら？ ２日酔いかな？ ちょっと酒臭かったし。」

What's the matter? で、「どうしたの？」というように、相手のことを心配してたずねることができます。
相手の体調が悪そうなときに使います。

★ポイント２
"He must have been drinking last night. I think he has a hangover. He smells as if he has been drinking."
「彼、昨日は飲んだんじゃないかしら？ ２日酔いかな？ ちょっと酒臭かったし。」
He must have been drinking last night. は「昨日彼は飲んだに違いない。」という意味です。
「〜したにちがいない。」というように、過去の出来事について、断定をするような意味で使うことができます。
主語の後の「must have」に、動詞の過去分詞をおきます。
（主語＋must have＋動詞の過去分詞）

意味：（過去に）〜したに違いありません

（親が子をしかる場合は scold を使います。）
＜今日のメモ＞
Take care. には、「お大事に」という意味があります。
その「気をつけてね。」という意味から、わかれるときのあいさつとしても使われます。
その場合は、「じゃあね。」といった意味合いになります。
"I haven't seen him before. Let me see, he looks like a good-natured man."
「私はまだ見たことなかったな。なんか、やっぱりいい人っぽい。」
a good-natured man は「いい人」という意味です。
形容詞の後ろに「natured」をハイフンで結んで、その人の性質をあらわすことができます。
ill-natured は「意地悪な人」という意味です。
