10. Dare ( objectiveness)
"Dare" is either the modal auxiliary or the main verb. It is usually used as the main verb. It is used in the interrogative and negative sentence as the modal auxiliary. These are similar to the usages of "need." (Cf. the previous section.)
This has the only meaning, "courage."

(1)
a. I daren't tell her the sad news.
b. Dare you speak?
c. How dare you show your face?

When this is used as the main verb, "to-infinitive" is sometimes omitted. In the case of this, it is unknown whether it is the modal auxiliary or the main verb.
Moreover, if "how dare" is used like (1c), it means resentment against the hearer, that is, it is the exclamatory sentence.

The past tense is "dared", it is natural that this used in the interrogative and negative sentence. See the following examples.

a. Nobody dared speak to her.
b. How dared he contradict his boss?
